    PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja established on December 24, 1959, is the first urea fertilizer producer in Indonesia. Sriwidjaja is taken as the name of the company to immortalize the history of the triumph of the Sriwijaya kingdom in Palembang, South Sumatra which was highly respected in mainland China to Southeast Asia, in the Seventh Century AD.

    August 14, 1961 was an important milestone in the history of Pusri. It was the time when the construction of the first fertilizer plant known as Pusri I Plant carried out. In 1963, Pusri I Plant started its production with an installed capacity of 100,000 tons of urea and 59,400 tons of ammonia per year.

    Along with the growing demand of fertilizer, during the period 1972-1977 Pusri built Pusri II Plant, Pusri III and IV. Pusri II plant has an installed capacity of 380,000 tons per year. In 1992 the company performed a urea optimization project of Pusri II Plant with an installed capacity of 552,000 tons per year. Pusri III plant was built in 1976 with an installed capacity of 570,000 tons per year, while the Pusri IV urea plant was built in 1977 with an installed capacity of 570,000 tons per year.

    Since 1979, Pusri had been assigned by the Government to implement the distribution and marketing of subsidized fertilizers to farmers as the implementation of the Public Service Obligation (PSO) to support national food program by prioritizing the production and distribution of fertilizers to farmers throughout Indonesia.

    In 1993 the development of Pusri IB Plant with installed capacity of 570,000 tons per year was performed to renovate and increase the production capacity as well as replacing Pusri I plant which its operations discontinued due to age and decreasing efficiency level.

    In 1997, Pusri was designated as the holding company which supervised four state-owned enterprises in the fertilizer and petrochemical industries, namely PT Petrokimia Gresik, PT Kujang Cikampek, PT Pupuk Kaltim and PT Pupuk Iskandar Muda and one engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company, PT Rekayasa Industry. In 1998, another subsidiary of the state-owned enterprise of Pusri joined, namely PT Mega Eltra dealing with trade.

    In 2010 the company conducted Separation (Spin-Off) from PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja or PT Pusri (Persero) Limited Company (Persero) to PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang and transfer of rights and obligations of PT Pusri (Persero) to PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang as stated in the RUPS-LB on December 24, 2010,became effective on January 1, 2011.

    Since 18 April 2012, SOE Minister Dahlan Iskan inaugurated PT Pupuk Indonesian Holding Company (PIHC) as the name of the new fertilizer holding company, replacing the PT Pusri (Persero). PT Fertilizer Sriwidjaja Palembang is still using the brands and trademarks of Pusri up to now.
